Thank you very much for your e-mail. As you may know, the City
of San
Diego is not the lead agency in San Diego for providing services to
the
homeless. That responsibility would fall upon the County of San
Diego. (web site is at www.co.san-diego.ca.us)
However, the City does assist in meeting the needs of the homeless in
our
community. We have contacted other agencies and have not been
able to
find any with literacy programs as part of the services they provide
the
homeless. Most of our programs are designed to evaluate what
the needs
are and then get them services that they might need such as drug treatment
and mental health services. In some situations it may be
they simply
need shelter for a short period. Our goal is to transition them
as
quickly as possible into long term solutions. The city does have
a wealth
of literacy programs, however, I don't know of any that are specifically
target to the homeless. If I do learn of any, I will pass this
information along to you. Also, I would be very interested to
learn of
any programs which you believe are effective and maybe something that
we
should consider. Thanks again for contacting and best wishes
on your project.
