The Decisions of Mankind
It begins very abruptly. The lighting is continuously dark and the people are dressed differently than that of today. This is the director’s idea of what the future holds for mankind. The unique movie is entitled Blade Runner. It encompasses many issues that the people of today need to come to grip with before it happens later. If they ignore the problems, there will be an uprising and then a global war. The movie takes place in a city that has a few underground “rats” that were running around amongst the people. A police officer, Deckerd was ordered to find these “rats” which were called replicants and destroy them. During his mission he encounters many more problems and falls in love with Rachel. Replicants were machines that looked just like real people; they had feelings, they could think, and they even had skin that looked real enough to the naked eye. The people of today need to sit back and realize that in developing machines there are many extreme questions raised, such as whether they are slaves or should be allowed to live normal lives. There are also moral issues to consider and how far is too far to go to make a machine that is lifelike.
I think if the people of today are going to make machines that look exactly like humans then they should understand that the replicants have the right to live their lives also. Not everyone believes the way I do, but I believe that God made men and women in his image. I believe if He wanted people to have slaves, then He probably would have made them instead of letting engineers do the work. Genetic Engineering is a noble job, but somebody needs to keep an eye on what is going on and not let him or her take their job too far. If the engineers can figure out how to stop genetic diseases that are passed down through the generations, then such an accomplishment as that should be commended. When they start going into the idea of actually making people, then that is where somebody needs to draw the line. Life is precious and no one person should dictate the life of another human being.
A high percentage of the people have the rights “of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” in the wonderful country of the United States of America. As long as we have the Bill of Rights, no one can take away his or her rights unless there is probable cause. I feel if a Genetic Engineer is going to make a replicant, then he or she needs to sit back and look at the moral issues. A machine that looks and thinks like a human is too advanced for the world today. If this information got into the wrong hands, there could be a massive war. If someone like Adolf Hitler got this information, he could make millions of troops to kill everyone else. There is no way to look into the future and see what is really going to happen. Maybe if genetic engineers accomplish such a feat, then the world may benefit from it and no major problems may arise. There is no way to be sure. To be on the safe side, I feel that they should put more thought into such an idea and explore all the possibilities before continuing a project such as that.
The world has always been mysterious. Life itself has always had its own way of being unique and interesting. The history of mankind shows that people have survived through everything that has been put in front of them. Many cultures have risen to be the dominating nation and many of those same cultures have experienced the fall out. The replicants would be a new thing for mankind, but if humans had to unite and fight together against the replicants, I am almost certain that the replicants would fall over a matter of time.
Another scenario could be what would happen if the replicants got smarter and started reproducing themselves? This would be a huge concern for the rest of the world. In the movie Terminator, there were cyborgs that became smarter than their makers were. There was a huge war and many people were slaughtered. I personally do not want to live in hiding the rest of my life from machines that are trying to kill me. The earth is only so big and it can not hold trillions and trillions of people, animals, and replicants. One culture would have to give way to the other. Since the replicants seem to be stronger and have faster reflexes, the people might lose. This should be another one of the many factors considered before genetic engineers decide to make machines that can think and look exactly like humans.
Since the replicants are a breed of their own, who would run this country? Who would have the right to the jobs of today? These are only a few of the millions of questions that need to be asked before genetic engineers make a big mistake. As time goes on the future is constantly changing. No single person can determine what is going to happen. It is up to the people to step forward and take charge now before it is too late and there are millions of replicants among the humans.
There is symbolism interweaved into Blade Runner. Towards the end, Deckerd releases a dove. This can signify many different things. I think it symbolizes the fact that the replicants are no longer slaves and they are set free from bondage. The slavery of the replicants all ended at this point. Either they were dead or they were released and no one ever looked for them again. Slavery should be outlawed every. If people need workers, then they should have a mutual understanding with them. The owners of the slaves should become employers and the slaves employees. The slaves should get paid just like everyone else and be given a place to stay. The slaves should also be able to walk out on the deal if they feel they are not being treated fairly. If this system were used instead of slavery, it would make everyone a lot happier.
Life is constantly changing and so is the “norm” or average person.
Most of the time technology helps people and makes life easier, but there
is also those other times where it causes so many more problems.
The idea of playing “God” is a big controversy. Each person has his
or her own thoughts on the topic. No particular group of people will
ever have the right answer, but the future all depends on what happens
right now.
