Suggestions About the Future of Technology

In the essay, “Artifact/Ideas and Political Culture,“ Langdon Winner talks about an assortment of things.  In the last few sections of the essay, Winner talks about the future of technology and how we should go about using it to move forward with technological change. Winner pointed out three major statements in the essay: ” No innovation without representation, ”  “No engineering without political deliberation,” and “No means without ends.

The first statement he writes about is “ No innovation without representation.” To Winner, this statement means that all the social interests and groups that are affected by technological change should be recognized at an early stage so they could find out what the technology should be or will be.  He also notes that sometimes technology is found in a complex way.  I feel the same way; we should not hide technology for any reason unless it could harm us in the future, like the atomic bomb or any other kind of dooms day device. If an invention of a new change in technology is found, we should represent it so others can benefit from it.

Winner goes on and writes about “No engineering without political deliberation.” He proposes that we should all share our ideas about a certain technological change and not just use it in one society, but in all societies. He writes, “ The education of engineers ought to prepare them to evaluate the kinds of political contexts, political ideas, political arguments, and political consequences involved in their work”(297).  I feel that this can be a benefit or birdon.  If you share the technology and become resonsible for our actions and not abuse the ideas for in a bad way, but there is always going to be someone that will abuse technology in the wrong way,

The last statement that Winner talks about is “No means without ends.” Winner writes about how we introduced computers in schools produced a need for them even more and how television became more and more of a need. I believe that Winner is trying to say that we create a need for technology. For example, the microwave, we didn’t have a need for a microwave in the past, but now we created one.  Almost every home in america has a microwave in the kitchen now and the same consept is going to happen to computers. i will bet that there will be a computer in every home in the future.

As the essay goes on, Winner tell the reader how these three statements have been put to good use by Scandinavian democracies and how they experimented with iy in a project.  The project was called UTOPIA, which consist of Swedish newspapers that joined together to design a new program that has computerized graphics for newspaper layouts and typesetting. UTOPIA plans were to revolutionize the program so that it would help the progression of technology.

In the last few sections of the essay, Winner propose that for humans to be in
power they should shape themselves as the world moves on with technology and become
more capable of using computers and being familiar with technology as it changes
over the years.  If society does not accomplish this, they will suffer from lose of jobs and
education, because computers may take over the work force, and make it difficult for humans to get jobs. In the last sentence of the essay, Winner says” If we can not develop these skills or do not care to, if we fail to confront the world-shaping powers that new technologies present, then human freedom and dignity could well become obsolete remnants of a bygone era”(299).
