Eric's Analysis

Zuboff says "Because machines are mute, and because they are so precise, they  can be controlled according to a set of rational principles in a way human bodies cannot."(375)

Can these smart machines really take over our jobs?  She seems to believe so.  The future is headed toward computers in the work place, but taking over all human jobs.  I can see computers taking lower class jobs, because these jobs can be done better and cheaper by computers.  The government is trying to stop the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer, by raising minimum wage.  But the might be the wrong thing to do, because if we raise the price for a human to do the job soon the computer will be a cheaper way of handling the job.  I can never see our government letting this happen because there are already too many poverty stricken homes in america.  Also Zuboff never mention problems with computers.  Computers are not perfect. They break and crash all the time.  If our world were solely run by computers what would happen if the certain computers crashed for no reason.  Peoples lives could be in danger, because all work would cease and no one would no what to do.  Zuboff argument would have been helped if she talked about different problems with computers.  Another good point she failed to mention is what would entertain become in the future if computers ran everything.  Would Television be obsolete, or would all the shows be full of robots?  How would the world be run?  She does wander about how taxes would be paid.  This is a good point she makes, because the reader most think about the future and where our world is headed.

She says, "A computer program makes it possible to rationalize activities more comprehensively that if they had been undertaken by a human being."(376)

This is a broad generalization, because not all computer programs are more accurate than humans are.  Take my first project in physics.  We were assigned to find if there were any errors in the Interactive Physics simulations.  By working the problem out with calculus we got more accurate answers than the physics program.  The programs are written by humans, so they can also have human error in them. I do see computers as helpful but not controlling our everyday lives. Computers can be programmed to run simulation of specific events.  They can be programmed to predict how many people a hospital could help in a night.  These programs are very useful in everyday engineering because they can help see problems before they happen. Now I can see computers being used in every job office by humans but not controlling all the process of the world.  Her argument is for us to see that computer can be exploited, because they do have certain advantages over humans.  And that we should make that human jobs are not taken by computers.  I agree with this, but I can really not imagine a world where no one works.  Our society is now based on capitalism, and in a world run by computers capitalism means nothing.  Money would be pointless and the world would be full of lazy bums.  This would never happen, because there are to many rich people.
