In the Age of the Smart Machine
Shoshana Zuboff

In her essay she proposes many interesting thoughts.  Such as, will man still be needed in the work place which goes along

with the "labor question" (375).  Will the smarter machines start to take over and fill in the place of man?  These questions

made me stop and ponder, how will the world be in the future?  I feel the world will change drastically over the next 100

years.  I hope it will be for the better, but I have my doubts.

In her essay she talks about how machines are more efficient than people.  She also states that machines can do 3 or 4

different things at the same time.  While one person can only do one thing at a time, with a possibility that they can do two

things simultaneously.  Zuboff feels that corporations are all competing against each other to be the best, so they try to keep up

with the latest in computer technology.  This means that they are always updating their equipment.  This also means that they

need less man power and more computer power because they feel that the computers are more efficient.

I agree with her fully.  If industries and corporations keep on competing with each other the way they are know, there will be

fewer and fewer jobs for the people.  This will cause a major problem for the economy of the United States and that of the

world.  If people do not have jobs, then they can not pay taxes and they will not be able to afford anything.  We need to

understand that computers are great, but we can not just rely on them and forget about the people who run them and those that

made the computers.
