Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology, by definition, is the technology of the very small.  Nanotech really applies to both GE and AI, since it allows for things to be miniaturized to a molecular size, and entire systems to the size of a cell.  It applies specifically to GE by creating new tools to use for manipulation of DNA and gene splicing. As the tech advances, things like biological computers and mass storage systems will be a reality, and these devices depend on GE for their development.

By AI, robotics is implied.  Possibilities of nanotubes and other molecular structures will allow robots to be formed from the atomic level up, creating better, stronger robots the size of a single cell. This would allow the creation of smart "drugs" -nanobots that would deliver drugs or remove arterial plaque, destroy tumors, or attack bad bacteria and viruses.

This technology could also be used to put sensors and "bug" every person on earth, allowing someone to monitor the actions and possibly thoughts of an entire society.

Nanotech could allow cheaper production, and also the reduced size of the technology could allow it to be produced almost anywhere. It holds the potential to be either the Bane or Boon of our existence.
