This
is the aspect we must look at the most when reviewing new technology.
The fact that anyone who wants to could make a weapon of mass destruction.
Does this make anybody shudder? It makes me. Just because somebody
has a bad day sometime in the future, we could be looking at extinction.
I know this may seem to much of a stretch, but think about it. This
is what Joy is trying to get us to think about. He knows that we
need to make regulations, and think about the ethnical issues related to
our new technologies. This is what Joy fears the most after reading
these other texts that seem to confirm Kaczynski’s arguments about a dystopian
society. I think that Joy is on the right track. Look at where
technology is going. Anybody can get the information they want without
even walking out of their room. We have access to the largest collection
of information in the world right inside our computers. We can hook
up to the world wide web and instantly be connected to other computers
as far away as the mind can imagine. This access to information can
possibly be our downfall. As Joy has pointed out, the new weapons
of mass destruction will be knowledge based. And as we know, knowledge
is free to anyone who wants it.
