Number
one, I agree with Kaczynski If we do not in the forefront, learn
to control the technology we develop, then eventually it will learn to
control us. We also need to understand our role with this new technology.
We cannot depend on it for our livelihoods. I believe that as soon
as we do this, then we become slave to the technology. I think this
is what Joy is trying to convey to us in this area of his work. If
we could not survive without the technology we have introduced into our
world, then in essence we would no longer be free people. Even though
Kaczynski is obviously a luddite, we can see real merit in the ideas he
brings up. Joy also finds another work that supports Kaczynski’s
ideas. This work has made me even think about what we depend on in
our lives. The number one piece of technology that everyone depends
on is the automobile. I don’t think anyone would disagree with me
on that point. Think about it. Even though we can walk anywhere
on campus and have access to almost everything via the CAT bus, how many
freshman and/or upperclassmen have brought cars to the campus. Cars
are a security blanket to us. We have since become slave to the automobile.
In reading the Rants & Raves provided to us, I have found that other
people also agree with me in this idea. One of these thoughts is
illustrated in Amy
Larkin’s letter to the editor. This shows that we have started
to let technology rule our lives. I also believe that computers are
very close on the heels of the automobile. We already are dependent
on it in some areas. Think about it, we pay most places by credit
cards, our cars are controlled by computers. Most every electronic
device has some sort of computer in it.
