Atomic

Bill Joy says:                                                                                                                               see what Reed says

The similarities between how and in what manner the technology was and is being developed in atomic and GNR

weaponry are astounding.  “We should have learned a lesson from the making of the first atomic bomb and the resulting arms

race.  We didn’t do well then, and the parallels to our current situation are troubling.” (Joy, 248)  The comparisons Joy

includes in the argument enhance his ETHOS because in effect he is saying, ‘look what happened before.’

It has already been proven that developing new technology for the sake of knowledge can easily produce devastating

results that surprise even the developers.  “We know that in preparing this first atomic test the physicists proceeded despite a

large number of possible dangers.” (Joy, 250)
