Bill Joy says: see what James says
Referring to Weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC), Joy asks “What was the
difference in the 20th Century?”(Joy, 242). Joy states that NBC technologies required rare and almost unavailable raw
materials. Also, NBC technologies require “large-scale activities”(Joy, 242), and special programs. These NBC
technologies are also almost entirely run in large government funded militart laboratories.
Joy says that the GNR technologies being developed today are even more powerful and have the potential to be even more
dangerous than NBC technologies. Joy goes on to state that these new GNR technologies can be done by individuals or small
groups, and do not require large programs or rare raw materials. WMD used to be created by large military laboratories, but
now GNR is being used for wide spread commercial use, and being developed at an incredible speed. These new dangerous
technologies can be developed even faster and with even more unseen consequences than NBC. This, according to Joy,
will create “knowledge-enabled mass destruction (KMD)"(Joy, 242) which, when considered with self-replication can be a
terrible thing.
