Self-Replication

James says:                                                                                                                   see what Joy says

Although I don’t believe this point is as strong as Joy’s GNR vs Atomic point, I believe

here too is a very clear, simple line of logic at work.  “A Tale of Two Botanies” states that

“It’s unwise to assume, as most ‘genetic engineers’ generally do, that 90-plus percent of

the genome is ‘garbage’ or ‘junk’”.(Joy, 247)  Junk?  This goes straight with Joy’s point

that Genetics is a area of research  that we don’t know enough about to dive in head first.

He uses past events again to show that when we, as a race, dive into something that we

know little or nothing about, the results can be horrible.  Scientist knew more about what

they were doing when they created the atomic bomb than we know about what we are

doing today.  Joy’s argument successfully shows through a simple line of logic that what

we are doing today can and most likely will turn out even worse than old WMD.
