Utopia vs Distopia

Bill Joy says:                                                                                                                   see what Reed says

With these new technologies, namely robotics, the future can hold two major paths.  First a UTOPIAN society can exist

where humans and machines coexist, enhancing the good of all, “one in which humans gained near immortality by becoming

one with robotic technology.” (Joy, 238)  Think of it, computers and robotics so advanced, humans no longer work.  Our

lives are simply pleasure.

The other possible outcome of these developments is a DISTOPIAN society.  He best describes this scenario with a quote

from the Unabomber.  “ ‘What we do suggest is that the human race might easily permit itself to drift into a position of such

dependence on the machines that it would have no practical choice but to accept all of the machines’ decisions.’ ” (Joy, 239)

These results are a polar, yet both are very possible.
