Firstly technology should be considered an institutional system and no more or no less. Today's technology is today as capitalism was a century ago. Secondly the most important part of these advanced technological institutions is the social part. The institutions are the means by which highly centralized and intensive social control exists. These institutions must motivate training that this advanced technology requires. Thirdly there are many contradictions and social resistance. One such argument is a society of advanced technology requires a more disciplined population socially, while at the same time reducing the enforcement of the required discipline.
Fourthly technology is creating class conflicts
in society. Technology is building its own working and managing classes
just like earlier industrialization created its own working and managing
classes. Finally McDermott suggests that laissez innover should be
recognized as a conservative or right-wing ideology. Those in American
society against democracy have decided to enroll under laissez innover.
Seeing this is the first step towards a new reconstruction in America against
the "malaise, irrationality, powerlessness, and official violence that
characterize American life today."
